Understanding Music Exams & Their Benefits

Music exams provide a clear structure for learning, helping students stay focused while developing technical ability and performance confidence.

At our Aberdeen music school, most students choose to work towards graded exams as part of their long-term development. These exams offer:

  • A measurable way to track progress

  • Motivation through achievable goals

  • Opportunities to gain recognised qualifications

  • Improved discipline and practice habits

For parents, exams provide reassurance that their child is progressing in a structured and meaningful way.

If you are new to lessons, you can explore all available options on our music lessons page.

Rockschool Exams for Drums & Guitar

How Rockschool Exams Work

For drum and guitar students, we primarily follow the Rockschool syllabus, which focuses on practical performance skills and modern music styles.

Rockschool exams typically include:

  • Learning three pieces from the official syllabus

  • Completing technical exercises relevant to the instrument

  • Demonstrating timing, technique, and musical expression

Where possible, students are given flexibility in selecting songs, helping them stay engaged and enjoy the process.

How We Prepare Students

Our approach to Rockschool exam preparation is designed to build confidence gradually.

  • Lessons focus on developing the exact skills needed for each piece

  • Backing tracks are used to support timing and rhythm

  • Tracks can be slowed down to allow steady improvement

  • Tutors break down complex sections into manageable steps

Before submitting the final exam, every student completes a full mock exam. This allows them to practise performing the entire programme in one take, reducing nerves and improving performance quality.

Recording & Submission

For drum exams, performances can be recorded directly at our Aberdeen studio and submitted via video.

Parents or adult students usually handle the submission process, with full guidance provided by our team.

Trinity College London Exams for Drums & Guitar

In addition to Rockschool, we also prepare students for Trinity College London exams, including Trinity Rock & Pop qualifications. These exams offer a flexible, performance-based approach similar to Rockschool, with a strong focus on contemporary music styles.

You can explore Trinity qualifications here: Trinity College London Music Exams

And Trinity Rock & Pop here: Trinity Rock & Pop

This gives students more choice in how they progress, allowing us to tailor exam pathways to suit their musical interests and goals.

ABRSM Piano Exams in Aberdeen

Traditional Exam Structure

Piano students typically follow the ABRSM syllabus, one of the most recognised music examination boards in the UK.

You can learn more about ABRSM here: ABRSM Piano Exams

ABRSM practical exams are face-to-face assessments where an examiner evaluates a student’s ability to perform pieces, play scales and arpeggios, sight-read music, and demonstrate aural skills. Unlike lessons, students will not have time to practise immediately before entering the exam room, and the examiner may stop a piece once they have heard enough to assess performance.

Exam lengths vary depending on grade, typically ranging from around 12 minutes for beginner levels up to 30 minutes for Grade 8. Understanding this structure helps students feel more prepared and confident on the day.

What Piano Students Learn

Preparation includes:

● Set pieces from the ABRSM syllabus
● Scales and arpeggios
● Sight-reading skills
● Aural tests

ABRSM exams follow a structured format, where students prepare three pieces selected from specific lists:

  • List A – Typically more technical and faster-paced pieces

  • List B – More expressive and lyrical works

  • List C – A wider range of musical styles and traditions

Students perform one piece from each list, helping to develop a well-rounded musical ability.

In addition to pieces, students must also:

  • Perform scales and arpeggios from memory with accuracy and control

  • Complete a sight-reading test, playing a short piece they have not seen before after a short preparation time

  • Take part in aural tests, which assess listening skills such as rhythm, pitch, and musical awareness

Our tutors ensure students are fully prepared not just technically, but also mentally, so they feel confident walking into the exam environment.

ABRSM Marking & Results

ABRSM exams are marked using clear performance bands:

  • Distinction: 130–150 marks

  • Merit: 120–129 marks

  • Pass: 100–119 marks

This structured system gives students clear goals and allows progress to be measured over time.

ABRSM Theory Exams & Grade 5 Requirement

We also offer full preparation for ABRSM Theory exams, including support for students working towards Grade 5 Theory.

Grade 5 Theory is an essential milestone, as it is required before students can progress to Grades 6, 7, and 8 practical exams. It is also often a requirement for students planning to study music at college or university level.

Theory exams develop understanding of musical notation, harmony, and composition. Grades 1–5 are typically completed online, while higher grades may be taken in person.

Our tutors make theory accessible and engaging, breaking down concepts clearly so students can build strong musical understanding alongside their practical skills.
